U Surf:  What to Wear?

What to Wear?


So, you've got your board and it's all waxed up. You're almost ready to go, but when you step outside there is a chill in the air. You want to paddle out but don't want to be cold either. This page will give you a general guide for what to wear in certain weather and water conditions. NOTE: This guide is for the Jacksonville area only and for those who are used to the weather in Jacksonville.


Attire Conditions Image
Bathing Suit Warm air and water, small to medium size waves, not too rough.  
& Baggies Warm air and water, large and/or rough conditions. May be worn on a cool day in any conditions.
Board Shorts
Rash Guard (short or long sleeve) Worn any time of the year to avoid sun and/or a rash on your stomach. Can also be worn under a wetsuit for extra warmth or comfort.
Short Sleeve Rashguard
Neoprene Guard Warm air, cool water or cool air, warm water. This is likea longsleeve rash guard but a little thicker and warmer. Can also be worn in combination with a wetsuit.
Long Sleeve Rashguard
Vest Warm air, cool water. Gives a bit of extra warmth to the chest area.

Short John Cool air,cool water, sun out. Water temp between 73 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

Spring Suit Cool air, cool water, overcast day. Water temp between 73 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Spring Suit
Long Sleeve Shortie Cool air, cool water, overcast day, breezy. Water temp between 70 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
Long Sleeve Spring Suit
Short Sleeve Full Air and water temps under 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Sunny day, little to no wind.
 Short Sleeve Full Suit
Full Suit Air and water temps under 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Breezy and/or overcast.
Full Suit
Booties Water temp around or below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.  
Gloves Water temp below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.  
Hoods Water temp below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. (Not used in Florida.)
