U Surf: What to Ride?

What to Ride?

The right equipment is an important part of any sport. The sport of surfing is no different. Finding the right surf board to learn on can be difficult if you don't know much about the shapes. Below we have the descriptions of the three main types of surfboards, the shortboard, the fun shape, and the longboard. We hope this helps you decide which is the right board for you!

The Shortboard The Fun Shape The Longboard
The shortboard is generally between 5'8" and 6'3" long and between 18" and 19 1/4" wide. Their small size and narrow shape cause them to be unstable and hard for a beginner to paddle and maneuver on. This would be a good board for a young child to learn on. This board is also very light and easy to carry. The fun shape is a cross between a longboard and a shortboard. Fun shapes are usually between 6'10" and 8'6" tall and between 21" and 22" wide. The shape of the board resembles that of a shortboard. The stability of the board is like that of a longboard. This is a good board for young adults to try to learn on. The longboard is over 9'0" long. These boards are generally more than 22" wide and more than 2 1/2" thick. Longboards are very stable and easy to learn on. The down side to a longboard is that they tend to be somewhat heavy and difficult to carry. The up side is that you can catch even the smallest wave.
