U Surf: Where to Surf?

Where to Surf?

Learning to surf can be a difficult and dangerous thing. You don't want to start learning at a crowded break. It's also a good idea to have an experienced surfer with you when you are just starting out. This page will note some good places in Jacksonville Beach to learn to surf and other places to avoid.

Places to Surf
Location Description
14th Avenue South Good crowd of people. Usually a good number of women. Outside sandbar breaks good at low tide. Home of the Salt Water Cowgirls Surf Camp
22nd Avenue South Good crowd of people. Some women. Outside sandbar breaks good on a decent swell at low tide. Inside jacks up and dumps at high tide.
28th Avenue South Fairly nice crowd. Not too many women. Outside sandbar breaks good on a decent swell at low tide.
Dolphin Plaza In Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, Access 3. Breaks similar to the Poles (Access 5) but with less crowd. Bathroom facilities.
Atlantic and Neptune Beaches Most breaks at these beaches are fine for beginners to learn, especially Davis Street, Lora Street, and Cherry Street.
Places to Avoid
Jax Beach Pier (4th Avenue North) Very crowded on even the smallest day. Surfers are very aggressive and have little patience with new people. Extreme localism.
Mayport Poles In Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park, Access 5. Great break, especially during a Northeaster. Surfers are very aggressive. Localism.
Crossroads Ponte Vedra Beach at Route 210. Very sharky. Good break on decent swell.
North Jetties Ft. George Island area. Great longboarding break. Localism.
Countly Line Not to sharky but a lot of localism.
