The Sisters of the Sea Surf Classic: GROM EDITION is all about empowering the next generation of surfer girls.
We created this competition to give young girls a space in the lineup that is completely their own. Rooted in the Spirit of Aloha, this event is about fostering lifelong sisterhood, sharing the ocean, and celebrating our kaikamahines. We want every girl to paddle out feeling the full support of her community and return to a beach packed with people cheering her on. It’s all about a fun morning of waves, pure camaraderie, and making memories together.

The Sisters of the Sea SpiritFAQs
-
Because this is an unassisted division, competitors must be confident swimmers and capable of managing their own surfboard in open ocean conditions. If your grom can comfortably paddle out through the surf and catch waves independently, they are ready to rock! We will also have an incredible, dedicated water safety team and lifeguards on-site.
-
No, this is a completely unassisted competition. To ensure safety and fairness in the lineup, parents and coaches must remain on the beach. All groms must be able to paddle out and catch their own waves.
-
Since it’s an Open Division, they can ride whatever board they feel most comfortable and confident on! Soft-tops, shortboards, or longboards are all welcome.
-
Traditionally, Sisters of the Sea events celebrate female surf camaraderie. Our inaugural grom competition is dedicated to empowering young girls in the water.
We recommend checking out other local competitions like Thompson Surf Classic, FaverGray WaveMasters Pro/Am, and many more geared for all groms!
-
While we love that there are girls wanting to compete, for our inaugural grom comp, we are keeping the age limits strict.
If your child is under 6, please have them enter next year!
If your child is over 13 and interested in competing, we encourage them to try out for the SOS Surf Team next year! We allow ages 14+ and would love to have them try out! For more info on the team, check out their page!
-
We are running one single Open Division this year! All ages, skill levels, and board types (shortboards, longboards, and foamies) will compete together in a fun, supportive, and inclusive format.
-
Our judges are looking for fun, control, and effort! Because different ages and board types are surfing together, judging will focus on making the most out of the wave they catch.
-
Aloha and welcome to the sisterhood! Each heat will be 15-minutes where 6 girls will be competing at once. The top 3 girls will move on to the next round, with our Final consisting of 6 girls and in one, 20-minute heat. Before each heat, you will hear a horn go off and another one go off with 5 minutes left, with a final, longer horn to represent the end of the heat.
