Sisters of the Sea is honored to host Sisters & Survivors, a free, empowering surf clinic dedicated specifically to female survivors of cancers. Whether you are currently in treatment or years into remission, this event is designed to help you reclaim your strength and find joy in the water.
Held since 2014, this annual event celebrates and supports women in our community who have faced cancer.
Partnering with Saltwater Cowgirls, and amazing volunteers in our community, we offer free surf lessons for survivors on a day full of joy, healing, and stoke.
Over the last decade, we have had -
Over 350 survivors have surfed with us.
Support from local orgs like In The Pink and the Mammoglams Dragon Boat Club.
Honored participants of all ages come — including our oldest sister, Bobbi Cordova Hanks, who joined us at 80 years old.
It’s more than an event — it’s a celebration of life, courage, and community.

Sisters of the Sea is looking for dedicated volunteers to help make our Sisters & Survivors event a success! This free surf clinic is a powerful day of healing and empowerment for female survivors of cancer, and we need a crew to help our participants catch the wave of a lifetime!
How You Can Help
You don't need to be a pro surfer to make a difference! We have roles for everyone, whether you’re a water person or prefer to keep your feet on the sand:
Water Support: Work alongside the SOS and the Saltwater Cowgirl teams where you’ll assist participants in the water by pushing or catching them. You'll be helping them transition onto boards, providing physical stability, and (most importantly) cheering them on as they catch waves!
Set Up: Help us with set up by bringing boards down to the beach, and tent and table
Take Down: Help us with taking down the beach set up by bringing boards back to Saltwater Cowgirls' trailer and breaking down tents and tables

Yes, of course! We encourage all female survivors of cancer, regardless of surf ability, to come out and catch a wave with us! There will be a lesson taught on the beach before you paddle out to ensure you know how to lay on the board, paddle, pop up, and where to place your feet.
-
While the ability to swim is a must for most surfing, we have a team of excellent volunteers who will be able to assist you along the way and ensure full safety. We encourage you to bring a life jacket as an additional safeguard.
-
Just a swimsuit, sunscreen, a towel, a water bottle, and your "can-do" spirit. We will provide everything else!
-
We encourage you to consult with your doctor first, but our instructors are happy to adapt the lesson to your energy and mobility levels.
